1. What made you decide to start your company?
I started this company because I saw what the effects that organization and disorganization can have on a person’s life. People that are organized have lower stress, and overall a more fulfilling, productive life. It’s also proven that when kids are taught how to organize, that they go on to make more money and have better careers.

I see my company in 5 years with its own product line, a TV show and around the world.

My inspiration was that my dad always told me to do what I love- find what I’m passionate about and pursue it- don’t worry about the money, the money will come later, just do what you love. He suddenly passed away when I was 20, and I went full-force after that. I was unstoppable.
I saw what a difference living an organized life has on your mental and physical state. Not only do you feel better bringing company over, but you can find your stuff when you need it. Being organized saves people time and money. It even brings families closer because they have room to relax together in. I think its important to love the things that will love you back and stuff will never love you. If you get rid of the stuff, you have more room to focus on what’s really important- and that’s family, friends, pets, hobbies, etc. It’s also easier to keep clean when there’s less stuff. Who wants to be in a dirty space?
4. What turns you on?
What turns me on is making peoples dreams come true. Taking a space that is making a person feel guilty and ashamed and turning it into something that looks beautiful, represents the person, enhances their current lifestyle and most importantly, seeing the person smile because they no longer feel embarrassed.
5. What advice do you have for tomorrow’s female entrepreneurs?
Advice for female entrepreneurs is that you have to listen to your gut and do what you know is the right thing for you. Everyone wants to give you their advice, so its easy to get confused or knocked off your path. You can listen to other people’s opinions, but ultimately, you have to make your own decisions. You may have to make many personal sacrifices, but it is certainly worth it in the long run and you will be the one that is retired early while all your friends are still working. If you are passionate about something that is making peoples lives better, than go for it! Don’t ask permission. Power is never given, it is always taken, so take it! Get focused, surround yourself with the right people that keep you positive, and just go for it. The only regret you will have is not doing it sooner… you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You are in charge of your own destiny--you can create your own life if you plan ahead and anything is possible if you work hard enough for it.

Then after freelancing for several months, I was shooting at a Ladies Who Launch event and was so inspired by all the successful woman entrepreneurs there that I started sketching out a plan that day. It was that seminar followed by the unbelievable amount of support from my boyfriend who encouraged me every step of the way that helped me decide to start my own business.
2. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In 5 years I see my business being successful, profitable and fulfilling.
3. Who was your inspiration?
Strong, powerful, positive people inspire me. Someone who can rise above and stay true to themself no matter what the outside influences are.
4. What turns you on?
Without a doubt: confidence.
5. What advice do you have for tomorrow’s female entrepreneurs?
The only thing that scares me more then failing is never trying. Don't be afraid to fail. One of my mantras is "It's only a mistake if you don't learn anything from it." Go out there and be the best you can be, because no one else can be you.

I love surprises, challenging myself, trying new things and broadening my horizons. If I could go anywhere in the world I would go to New Zealand and would go on crazy adventures all over the country. For my 30th birthday I had a paintball party, and would love to have one for my 40th too.

After graduating from Fashion Careers of California in sunny San Diego, Margaret packed her bags and began her career in fashion in San Francisco working for Bebe. Margaret also created and designed her first line of bustiers, known for their highly decorative 80’s style. Exactly one year later, Margaret moved to the Big Apple and was offered a sales position at Barneys New York in the Lingerie Department, which she embraced and helped grow the business, literally doubling sales each year for a period of over eight years. She began in sales, was promoted into management and recruited into buying. Her role directly involved her in the merchandising and buying of over ninety international lingerie lines.
At Barneys New York, she attended the Paris Lingerie trade shows, helped create private label and worked with artisans and designers to build unique collections for the Barney’s clients. She had the privilege of working with designers and vendors from La Perla, Andra Gabrielle, Danielle Hanson, Prada, Jil Sander, Grazia L’liani, Kristina Ti, Cappucine Perrari, Chantal Thomas, Sabia Rosa, Collette Dinnigan, Fifi Chacnil, Carine Gilson, Hanro, Donna Karan, Laurence Tavernier and many more fine lingerie collections. She also was part of the team that opened the first La Perla flagship boutique on Madison Avenue in 1995.

My Mom was my inspiration. I like to think of myself as a “sensuality stylist.” My interests began when I was a little girl, playing dress up with my Mom’s glamorous clothes, gowns, jewelry, accessories and high heels. I loved how I looked, especially when I put on a little of my Mom’s signature perfume, Chanel N°5, and her bright red lipstick.My favorite thing to do was get all dolled up and walk through my sunny San Diego beach neighborhood—I was a courtesan at age 5! I flirted with the little boys, the neighbors and even the dogs!
What bliss it was to feel as though the entire world was waiting for me, Margaret, to appear.Yes, my journey as The Lingerie Goddess began back then, and my love of all things feminine and sensual became my life’s passion, one that has sustained me through my own life struggles. Five Fun Facts About Margaret:
1. Growing up in San Diego, I am a huge fan of boogie boarding, surfing and anything that has to do with the beach. Swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling and spending time on boats are some of my favorite hobbies. I even opened a scuba diving business in NYC in 1998, which is still thriving and has a very strong technical diver following. I have gone scuba diving in some of the most beautiful places in the world, including The Cayman Islands, Hawaii and Cozumel. Underwater, I swam with dolphins, nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, stingrays, giant eels, barracuda, sea turtles, jellyfish, marlin, groupers and a whale shark. My dream is to spend time diving and relaxing on the beach in Fiji.
2. I was and still am obsessed with NYC! From the time I was a teenager, I had always dreamed of the bright lights of the big city. After completing my degree in Fashion Merchandising and working in San Fransisco, I packed my bags at age 22 and moved across the country to Manhattan. Talk about being a risk-taker….I had $900, no job and knew one guy that I met at the famous Limelight Club in NYC that I had met while on vacation. 20+ years later I am still living in Manhattan and have had over 2 decades of fun exploring this amazing city ~ there is nothing like it! Opportunity just oozes out of the sidewalks and the “best” of everything, especially the people, are all here.
3. I ran the NYC Marathon in 1995 and I am still very proud of myself for accomplishing such an incredible goal. Before running the marathon, the most I had ever ran was about a 5K. It took me 6 months of focused training to get in the best physical shape of my life and participate in the marathon. It took me under 6 hours to complete it and I desire to run another Marathon someplace beautiful like Italy and run it under 5 hours. I have also volunteered for two NYC Marathon’s for a group called Achilles Heels, for runners with disabilites. One year I crossed the finish line with a wheel chair runner from Russia, who spoke no English, and we both burst into tears and hugged each other when he completed his run. Another time I assisted a blind runner who was 70+ years old and had the most gorgeous attitude about life. Running is a powerful gift, I am in such appreciation for the strong healthy body I have.
4. I worked in Banking for 5 years, selling financial services to consumers and small businesses at Citigroup. I was licensed to sell life insurance, mutual funds and annuities. I worked at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and was one of the fortunate people who escaped with my daughter who attended pre-school at the WTC. I missed my meeting at Cantor Fitzgerald, which saved my life. For the past 9 years my daughter and I receive letters from 3 & 4th graders from a school in California that my cousin teaches at. The children write us each year and call us on 9/11 to sing a song “I’m proud to be an American” to us and to let us know that they are thinking of us. It has been extremely healing as we read the letters and write the children back and send the class “I love NYC t-shirts” each year. We have probably received over 300 letters over the past nine years which is a beautiful act of love that we cherish.
5. Over the past 15+ years I have had a “relationship” with South Beach, Miami. It began with stopping over night whenever I traveled to the Caribbean for vacations. Then it became a fun weekend getaway, where my daughter was conceived. Next I spent 2 years living on the beach as I went through my divorce…I figured I may as well enjoy myself until we figured it all out! Now I have an apartment on the beach, where I live part-time with my 2nd husband who lives there full time. Yes, I live in NYC and South Beach and it keeps my marriage very juicy and gives me the space to focus on all the other important parts of my life! All our lamps and chandeliers are made by hand, using glass, metal, and plexi sourced in New York City, and reclaimed water tower wood. We love to customize our designs, and to bring colored light to your special event. I think of them as practical dream catchers, stories told in light through colored glass.
WHO ARE YOU?
1. What made you decide to start your company?
One of my favorite things is to look at light shining through colored glass. So when I came across some vintage glass swizzle sticks and saw the colors that shone through when the glass was held up to the light I had one thought – I must make these into lamps!
During this time, I was also dealing antique tribal rugs. I lived on the colors, patterns and history; the rugged beauty, meant to be used. And I loved matching the right piece to the right person; meeting and talking with customers brought me out of my shell. But I wanted to make things with my own hands, to add to the stories told by the world of beautiful objects
So for the next year, I kept experimenting with design ideas and started taking classes at a glass studio in Brooklyn. Once I knew I was onto something special, I brought on collaborators and soon my original concept expanded into two full collections of table lamps, pendants and chandeliers, as well as large-scale custom work.
2. Where do you see your business in five years?
I see a beautiful body of collaborative custom work created in hotels, restaurants and lounges. I see Andarina Designs continuing to work with architects and designers to create installations and one-of-a-kind large - scale pieces. I hope to see our lamps and pendants available in retail stores including Moma and ABC Home. Andarina Designs remains community based and employs local artisans. We use innovative, green materials and seek out inspiring, Earth honoring projects.
3. Who was your inspiration?
The creative, child-like part of me. My company name, “Andarina,” means “little girl walker” in Spanish. This is the place, the little girl explorer inside of me that always takes in the beauty wherever I go and wants to share her gifts with the world.
Overcoming shyness was the big challenge. But the desire to create and the process of creating my lamps was finally enough to push me forward. I feel I owe it to Andarina to conquer my fears and get her creations out into the world.
And my Grandma is always an inspiration. She was the fanciest, most sparkly lady ever.
4. What turns you on?
Color, collaboration and that spark of inspiration. And a man with big, strong hands.
5. What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs?
Double-check your emotions. I found that starting my own company brought up old neurosis. Stuff came up that had nothing to do with the true state of affairs of business. Having a reality check friend is invaluable. Stay positive and stick with it. Even if you do one thing a day to move yourself forward, that counts.
6. Tell us a sexy secret ;-)
I worked and studied in a Mangrove swamp in Costa Rica for 8 months. As a result, I have a sexy little scar on my right leg thanks to an attack of flesh eating bacteria.

WHO ARE YOU?
1. What made you decide to start your company?
Two years ago, I returned from directing in Juneau, Alaska and learned that two of my friends’ sons were diagnosed with life threatening diseases, Severe Aplastic Anemia and Leukemia. I felt like the time had come to find a way to use my gifts and experience to rally support and create change for those in need.
2. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In five years, Community Stages will be available nationally, sending directors into sponsoring communities across the country. As part of our community outreach, we will partner with one under-recognized organization and one under-served community each year to bring special, sponsored programming.
3. Who was your inspiration?
As early as high school, I remember my theater mentors always saying “You have to make your own opportunities.” That’s what led me to directing and arts education in the first place. As an actor, I always hated the feeling of being left to the mercy of casting directors. I still do!
As far as Community Stages goes, my inspiration comes from the strength, courage, and determination of my two young friends and their families. Their struggles keep things in perspective and their desire to enjoy life reminds me that one of Community Stages’ biggest goals is to create a fun and nurturing experience for all those involved with the creation of each benefit.
4. What turns you on?
Adventure and beauty.
5. What advice do you have for tomorrow’s female entrepreneurs?

1. What made you decide to start your company?
I was 32, single, living in NYC and SO unimpressed with the dating scene. I had tried pretty much every singles event out there and then decided to give speed dating a go. I signed up for an event for singles 25-35. Upon arriving, I found myself surrounded by a sea of short, unattractive, socially awkward men. My first date started with the guy saying, “I know you, you’re on Match. Com. I emailed you 10 times and you never responded to me. I paid my $40 and now you have to talk to me for 8 minutes.” That brutal experience was the catalyst for me being inspired to create my own service where I could finally meet the type of men I was looking for. Instead of offering events based on just age range, we host over 75 niche events themed around dating “deal breakers” and preferences like “Hot for Teacher”, “Men With Accents Are Hot”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Inked” for tattooed singles, “Non-Practicing Jew” night, and “Size Matters” for guys and gals with a hankering for height.
2. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I see us expanding our "themed" speed dating & singles events into key markets across the United States and in Europe, while further growing some of our newer business divisions (matchmaking, and corporate party planning). We also have a new site currently in development called SingleSaver.Com which will offer "dating deals" and discounts on services and products key to a singles survival coupled by a social networking element that "deal-sites" like Groupon & LivingSocial are currently lacking. Also on my "to-do" list, hooking myself up with a man in the process.
3. Who was your inspiration?
NYC singles like myself that are totally over the dating scene. Despite being the 'singles capital of the world', NYC remains one of the hardest cities to have a relationship. The way the majority of singles events were structured based on age range wasn't really helping our cause. Think about it, are you more likely to connect with someone because they fall within your same 28-35 age range, or because they meet your height requirement, share your same political views and/or interests? By taking a fresh and new approach, I was able to raise the bar on the NYC singles scene, while at the same time significantly improving both my income and dating life.
4. What turns you on?
I think confidence is a total turn-on. As an entrepreneur it comes and goes, sometimes you have to fake it till you make it.
5. What advice do you have for tomorrow’s female entrepreneurs?
Make sure you have a strong point-of-difference. I see "me too" companies launching every day that aren't doing anything different, or better than their competitors. To really stand out and take market share you need to have a compelling point-of-difference that will separate you from the masses.
6. Tell us a sexy secret ;-)
I did the Howard Stern Show which was an experience I'll never forget. I also mix business and pleasure and despite popular belief, I highly recommend it!
